NICCI BEACH (5) is the horse to beat after a debut fifth at Vaal, where he was beaten just over six lengths by Dog In The Fog as an outside chance in betting. With that race experience, barrier 2 and a stable that has strong track credentials, he has the clearest scope to improve quickly. ASTROPHILE (6) brings the more established 1000m profile, with fourths at Vaal and this track by less than three lengths each time, and the 1.5kg claim plus weight relief keep her firmly in the contest despite her maiden record. COUNT OF CAPRI (4) has been safely held in two runs this campaign, yet he is third-up and his latest sixth at this venue gives him some hope if the main chances fail to take the next step. FIRST FROST (7) is the unknown runner on debut, a R250,000 yearling by One World from Frostfire, and the Tony Peter trainer-sire figures give her some appeal even though she has to do it without race experience.

Was second last on debut at this track, beaten over 15 lengths behind Two Tigers after starting at big odds. That leaves him with a sizeable gap to bridge, even with a slightly kinder setup second-up. With no placing from his only run at the track and distance, he must produce a sharp turnaround to get involved.

Back after five weeks following a flat second last at Vaal, beaten eight and a half lengths by God's Country when among the outsiders. He had been well-supported two runs back but was still beaten just over nine lengths in a small field. First try around 1000m adds another unknown, and his form has to lift noticeably.

Reaches third-up after finishing sixth at this track, beaten just over seven lengths by Two Tigers when big odds. His previous sixth at Vaal was a little closer, beaten five and a half lengths, so there is some base to work from. The concern is a 1000m record of three unplaced runs, which makes him look more a genuine place hope than a standout win chance.

Produced enough on debut at Vaal to make strong appeal here, finishing fifth over 1000m and beaten just over six lengths by Dog In The Fog after being rated an outside chance in betting. The race experience should count for plenty second-up, and barrier 2 gives him a clean platform to travel closer if required. With natural improvement, he sets the standard among the exposed runners.

Continues to hold her form, finishing fourth at Vaal last start and beaten two and a half lengths by Matinee after starting as an outside chance. She had also run fourth at this track behind Two Tigers, beaten just under three lengths, so the recent level is reliable. Weight relief and the 1.5kg claim help, but she still has to turn consistency into a breakthrough win.

Debuts for Tony Peter and has a profile that gives some interest without offering race evidence. She is a R250,000 yearling by One World from Frostfire, and the stable's trainer-sire combination has produced five wins from 26 runners. Half-brother Echoes Of War has won, but first starters still have to prove it under pressure, so the market will be an important guide.
