Sunshine Coast Poly Track Race 8

Kawana Dolphins (Bm58)

Prize Money: $28,000

BACKHANDER (2) earns top billing after making all at Dubbo, where she was near the top of betting and won over 2200m. Not expecting this to be a great deal tougher and Thompson's booking is a big push for his chances. AMELIORATION (1) is the obvious threat, arriving off consecutive favourite-backed wins on the turf here. Worth noting Thompson does come off though and she does go up in the weights. CLUBMAN (3) has a legitimate case to turn around the latest result after racing wide early behind AMELIORATION, while his long-neck second to Draw Attention prior reads well enough for this. MAKAMAE (5) comes through stronger races, hitting the line nicely on heavy ground last week. Gets back out to a favoured trip on the short turnaround and is among the winning chances.

Arrives in excellent order after successive Sunshine Coast wins, most recently taking a Class 2 over 2200m as favourite and beating Empress Aspen by a nose. She had earlier put away Evade The Game by just over a length in Class 1 company on soft ground, again well found by the market. The 61kg asks something, but the BM58 drop and claim keep her right in play.

Expected Settling Position: Midfield

Made all at Dubbo last start and beat Farraige by just over a length, showing the same on-speed professionalism that had carried her to second behind Gemtiki at Muswellbrook. This is harder company than that country win and 2000m is new territory, but her recent record is compelling, with three wins from her past seven in the last 12 months. New to 2000m and up in company, but her form is the strongest winning reference.

Had excuses when fifth behind Amelioration in a Class 2 at Sunshine Coast, racing wide early before finishing only fairly and beaten four and a half lengths. His previous run was much sharper, beaten a long neck by Draw Attention after travelling well, so there is a genuine rebound case. The prior long-neck second reads well, and the BM58 drop gives him a strong chance.

Worked home nicely from the back when fifth in a BM65 at Sunshine Coast last week, beaten just over three lengths on heavy ground. Two back she was wide throughout in a Class 3 at Eagle Farm, so the bare eighth has some context. Proven around 2000m and drops to BM58, so she profiles as a sound place hope.

Backs up quickly after running second in a BM62 at Gold Coast, though the margin of just over eight lengths keeps that placing in perspective. His fourth in a BM70 at Sunshine Coast the run before was more appealing, beaten just under two lengths after making solid late ground. His prior BM70 fourth was better, putting him in the place mix.

Ran second at Kilcoy last start but was beaten just over eight lengths by Trusty Bandit after beginning awkwardly and lacking the dash to threaten. The start prior was much worse, last at Gatton and beaten over 16 lengths after being unwanted in the market. His distance record offers some support, but his recent margins are too big to ignore and he has to lift sharply. Looking to others for the winner.
