Ascot Race 1

Prize Money: $80,000

Happy to put SNIPPEX (4) on top in the opener. He hasn't won a trial coming into this, though the time he ran in his latest heat when narrowly beaten a couple of lengths quicker than what his rivals produced on the same day. Drawn to get his chance and can put it all together right away. JUST AN ILLUSION (6) has won both trials coming into this, including beating a number of these rivals most recently. Looks to have good ability and Steve Parnham sticks from the latest heat. Can make an immediate impact. AHAB THE ARAB (1) jumped a $20 chance on debut but outperformed those expectations, finishing just 0.8L off the winner. Should be better for that effort and with the benefit of race experience under his belt, he can play a leading role. MALIBU STAR (7) was around JUST AN ILLUSION at the trials recently and can be in the finish. GOLDEN PACIFIC (2) was edged out by JUST AN ILLUSION in his latest heat and has claims.

Made a sound debut at this track, finishing third behind Swift Divide and beaten just under a length after jumping awkwardly. He was only an outside chance in the betting but pressed forward, held his position and finished strongly, so there was merit in the effort. Out-performed market expectations on debut and he can build on that effort.

Debuts from barrier 2 as a $50,000 yearling purchase by North Pacific from Pinova. Brad Parnham rides and the family has produced useful winners including Pin Deep and Useapin, which gives him some background substance. Is another who comes through the Just An Illusion trials and can make an impression.

Pedigree gives him some interest as a $80,000 Aysar gelding out of Bella Contessa and a half brother to Listed winner Bella's Idol. The Daniel & Ben Pearce yard has winners with first starters, but he draws wider in barrier 6 and meets a couple with stronger starting profiles. Looking to others.

Makes his debut for Simon A Miller with Chris Parnham booked, a pairing that gives this colt a strong professional profile from the outset. He is a $70,000 yearling by Splintex from Southern Snip and draws barrier 4 with 57kg. The $70,000 Splintex colt looks the leading winning chance.

Comments

Finished fifth on debut at this track behind Swift Divide, beaten just over two lengths after jumping awkwardly and racing keenly early. She was unwanted in the market and, while close enough at the turn, did not quicken when the race developed. Must settle better and quicken more strongly second-up.

Expected Settling Position: Off Midfield

Starts her career for the Neville Parnham stable with Steven Parnham riding and barrier 3 a positive starting point. The Lightsaber filly from Hannele carries 55kg, and the yard has a solid presence at this meeting. This Lightsaber filly gets a favourable set-up to make an immediate impact.

Comments

Draws the inside on debut and has a useful pedigree profile as a $60,000 Playing God filly from Magnesic. The family includes Golden Vale, a Listed placegetter and multiple Ascot city winner, so there is enough depth to respect her. Trialled around Just An Illusion coming into this and that looks solid form.
