Funabashi Race 5

1200

Prize Money: $51,500

MORIKEN (3) Did well when 3rd last start around here and promising career start. Shows good early pace. Going well this preparation. Jockey Yuuki Yamanaka is very comfortable steering. No surprise to see a win. INITIATION (6) Was very impressive when winning by 3L last time around here. Has run into the money 2 from 2 attempts this preparation. Looks to have a good chance of placing. ENERGY HIDDEN (5) Came in 6th last run at Urawa. Happy to forgive that run and good career start. Should muster plenty of early speed. No shock to see a win. WELCOME LUNCH (2) Fairly underwhelming when 10th last start at Urawa but will try to take advantage of the draw. Include in chances.

Comments

Worked home with purpose when fourth at Urawa last start, though the beaten margin was still eight lengths behind Les Deux Roses. The start prior was sounder, finishing third at long odds over 1400m after tracking the speed and keeping on evenly. She has placed three times from seven starts, including two placings with Keita Nishi, but the first try at 1200m makes her more a genuine place hope than a clear win play.

Comments

Was disappointing at Urawa last start, finishing tenth and beaten over 13 lengths after having many lengths to make up and never looking likely. Her previous run is the reason to give her some respect, as she won at this track by two and a half lengths from Miss Melody when prominent in betting. Back to 1200m helps, but she has to rebound sharply to be more than an outside each-way hope.

Returns after five weeks since finishing third at this track as favourite, beaten five and a half lengths by Stealth Hunter after working home evenly. He had been safely held over 1400m at Urawa the start prior, so there is a little recent edge to recover. The positive is his strong 1200m profile, with two wins and a placing from three attempts at this track and distance, which keeps him firmly in the place mix.

Returns from a four-month break with a tidy two-start record at this track, winning on debut by seven lengths before finishing second to Stealth Hunter. That last run came as an odds-on favourite and he only held on fairly, so it was not a complete performance, but the overall form still reads well for this. He has already placed at the distance, brings the winning rider back, and has the strongest winning profile.

Comments

Comes through solid enough Urawa form, finishing sixth last start when beaten just under five lengths after being only fair to the line. Two back he led and finished fourth over 1500m, beaten five lengths, so the recent margins are competitive without being dominant. He is still searching for a first win, but three placings from five starts and the booking of Tsubasa Sasagawa give him a live chance if 1200m suits.

Returns after five weeks following a decisive win at this track, where he beat Hakusan Funabashi by three lengths and kept finding with something in hand. His debut second to Presto Earth was also sound after he came from well back over 1000m. Third-up and unbeaten from the quinella in two starts, he has upside, but the market has him sitting more as a fringe chance in this deeper contest.

Was beaten a long way at Kawasaki last start after starting at big odds, and there is no clear excuse in the run to soften that result. The start prior was also only fair at this track, finishing fifth and beaten eight and a half lengths behind Stealth Hunter. Her earlier 1200m win gives her one positive, but the current form pattern says she must lift markedly to trouble these.
